Created in 1976, Locks 8 and 9 were merged, creating the second deepest lock in the country. The chamber is a whopping 19ft 5ins deep – that’s nearly six metres.
Works taking place here in December will include replacement of the towpath side timber quoin, replacing old cills, cutting down mitre and refitting gates.
This open day invites you down to not only see this amazing lock along the Kennet & Avon Canal, but be privy to some behind the scenes improvements.
As well as learning about the wildlife in the area – kingfishers and herons are regularly seen here – there will be a chance to make some bat and bird boxes for homemade Christmas gifts and learn about important water safety work taking place in Bath. There will also be actors from Natural Theatre Company bringing the characters of the canal’s past to life.
